League brawl inquiry to conclude

THE Sunshine Coast Gympie Rugby League says it hopes to within the week conclude its inquiry into a brawl at this year’s Caloundra RSL grand final.

While a majority of the crowd at this year’s final at Nambour Showgrounds was well behaved, the event was marred by a fight which broke out mid-afternoon.

The incident happened during the presentation of the reserve grade grand final between Caboolture and Caloundra.

Newly elected SCGRL president Les Williams said the league was hoping to wrap up its investigation last night and was expecting several people to be called before the tribunal to answer charges.

He said he expected at least three people to be punished, promising to throw the book at anyone found guilty. “As the new president, I’m not going to put up with that sort of thing,” he said.

“Everyone worked really hard for the event, and we’re not going to have future events ruined by idiots. League is the sort of thing you bring your wife, kids and family along to and we’re not going to have that ruined.”

He would not comment on which club the main offenders belonged, only that they would be severely dealt with under the league’s laws.

He said the league had obtained amateur footage of the incident which it intended to use as evidence.
