Bragging rights on the line in Hervey Bay's AFL derby

HERVEY Bay's Aussie rules sides will have been stuck on the sideline for 17 days when they finally play on Tuesday.

The Anzac Day double header is one of the most important dates on the regional AFL calendar.

A former staple of the AFL Wide Bay, it was adopted by the revamped QFA Wide Bay Sunshine Coast and will be hosted by Bay Power.

It pits the Power against cross-town rivals Hervey Bay Bombers for the first time this season.

Their last game saw the Power qualify for last year's grand final, but coach Michael Gay said his side did not boast a mental advantage over their rivals.

"We've got a few new players so it's not so much about the mental advantage for us," Gay said.

"We've added some size and speed but we're just keen to see where we sit compared to the Bombers."

It was a similar story from Bombers coach Tony Potter, whose troops were itching to get back onto the field after the long lay-off.

"We are looking forward to the challenge, we had a good two weeks since the last game but I think the guys are keen to see where they stand," Potter said.

"We've had seven training sessions since the Gympie game (Bombers won by five points on April 8). It's been fairly full-on at training, just going over a few of the things that didn't go to plan against Gympie and hopefully it'll work."
