Boundaries divide, weaken region
GYMPIE regional deputy planning and development committee head Councillor Jan Watt said Gympie was at a “disadvantage” due to the dislocation of government boundaries.
When it came to the State and Federal Governments, the Gympie region’s Local Government area is included as a part of the Wide Bay Burnett district.
Most times Gympie misses out on funding that South-East Queensland benefits from, with the Sunshine Coast the boundary between SEQ and Wide Bay, yet most of our services are grouped in with the Coast. “There is not enough co-ordination,” she said.
Cr Watt said one example was sport and recreation planning. When it came to State issues, Gympie was a part of the Sunshine Coast region.
Gympie Hospital is part of a new Sunshine Coast health area that covers hospitals located within the Sunshine Coast and Gympie Local Government areas.
Our fire fighters and police are located within their own North Coast districts, which includes the Sunshine Coast. The police North Coast Region extends to Bundaberg, Redcliffe and west to Blackbutt and Kingaroy.
The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service fire district goes north to Bundaberg, south to the Sunshine Coast and west to the Burnett hinterland.
