Boozy trip results in a crash after Gympie Show Rodeo

SOUTHSIDE man William George Howlett crashed his car when he was more than three times the alcohol limit after the Gympie Show Rodeo on May 17, Gympie Magistrates Court heard on Thursday.

Howlett, 33, came to police attention in a report of a single vehicle accident along Ramsey Rd on the Southside.

Police found Howlett and his female passenger lying on the grass of a nearby footpath.

Howlett's 2015 Holden Colorado had crashed head-on into a culvert after driving up an embankment and drifting across to the left-hand side of the road.

Howlett was taken to hospital with a broken tooth and shoulder injury and was arrested by police.

Seven days later, Howlett told police he and his passenger had no recollection of the crash.

Magistrate M Baldwin was incredulous. "Even blind Freddy would have known the police would be out during the show," she said.

Howlett pleaded guilty to drink driving with a 0.169 reading and was fined $980 and disqualified from driving for nine months.
