Boomers' chance to etch campaign in bronze

The time has almost come to stand and deliver Boomers.

At 12.30am tonight Australia will step onto the court in Rio with history and Spain staring them in the eyes.

It's an opportunity for Andrej Lemanis and his coaching assistants Luc Longley and Trevor Gleeson and their 12 players to go where no other team has gone before.

Let's not waste time dwelling of the shocker against Serbia.

Let's think of the glory and honour of being part of the first Australian side to win and Olympic basketball medal of any kind.

It's going to take something special against Spain - a brilliant side super talented and skilful.

But so is this Boomers side.

Until they hit Serbia's Red Wall in the semi-final loss they were full of belief they could win the gold medal.

They should not let the pain of that loss erode that belief.

It was one bad night out, admittedly a really bad night.

But prior to that loss Australia had played some of its best basketball, including taking gold-medal favourite USA to deep into the final quarter before losing 98-88 and had attracted global accolades for the way it played so tough.

They still have a golden opportunity, or should I say a bronze opportunity, to bring home an Olympic medal which would lift basketball's profile in Australia.

Patty Mills, who is averaging almost 20 points per game, will have to back himself as he has all through the Olympics.

Matthew Dellavedova, such a danger man early, needs to spark up following a disappointing game against Serbia, and Andrew Bogut, who went into the series with a knee injury, has to somehow dig deep and show his big heart for one last effort at both ends of the court.

The Boomers have had three shots at an Olympic medal and come up empty-handed each time.

Maybe, if they can show some mental and physical toughness, this will be their turn.
