Book highlights Labor's wasteful spending totalling $10b

THE Coalition has left no one in any doubt what its line of attack will be after Treasurer Wayne Swan hands down his sixth Federal Budget on Tuesday night.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, shadow treasurer Joe Hockey and the opposition's "waste watch" spokesman Jamie Briggs used a pre-budget media conference to release a book outlining 60 cases of government waste totalling $10 billion.

The Little Book of Big Labor Waste is an attempt by the Coalition to undermine Labor's claim that the budget of huge tax revenue write-downs.

Among the examples of waste are the $8.5 million spent on advertising for the SchoolKids Bonus, which the Coalition would dump if elected, and a $6.6 billion blowout on detention for asylum seekers.

Mr Abbott said the book highlighted Labor's "lack of respect for taxpayers' money".

"This booklet is full of emblematic examples of this government showing inadequate respect for the taxpayers of Australia," Mr Abbott said.

"So, the 60 examples of profligacy in this book exemplify the kind of mismanagement that this government has been responsible for over the last five years and they typify why the Australian public have come to the conclusion that this is a government which is simply incompetent and untrustworthy."
