Bondit backs up in South Grafton Cup

COFFS Harbour trainer Joe Janiak will back-up Bondit in this Sunday's South Grafton Cup providing the horse recovers well from yesterday's hard-fought Bowraville Cup (1370m) win.

Jockey Raymond Spokes lifted Bondit to a nose win over favourite Clan McClymont in the heavy conditions, automatically qualifying the five-year-old gelding for the $45,000 Grafton feature.

The gelding was lucky to gain a start in the Bowraville feature, after initially being listed an emergency when fields were announced.

Bondit has won at Grafton before and the five-year-old Hussonet gelding will be suited if the Clarence Valley track receives any more rain in the lead-up to carnival week.

“Bondit is an honest horse and he can handle the wet no problems, so if he pulls up well he'll be running in the South Grafton Cup,” Janiak said.

“I've nominated quite a few for the July Carnival and will be bringing three or four up for the prelude day on Thursday.”

Janiak has also nominated a number of other runners for Sunday's Coffs Coast Prestige Ladies Day, including Rockover Target.

Rockover Target is a promising three-year-old filly which was an impressive debut winner at Grafton last October.

“She has been nominated for a couple of races there on Sunday, there is a class one 1000-metre race for her, but I'm leaning more to running her at 1,400 metres in the benchmark 55 handicap,” Janiak said.

Janiak is a great supporter of country racing and loves returning to Grafton – scene of Takeover Target's 2004 Ramornie Handicap win.

After winning his sixth consecutive race for Janiak at Grafton in July of 2004, Takeover Target went on to become one of the fairytale stories of the turf, winning Group One races all over the world and changing the former taxi driver's life.

When Janiak first bought Takeover Target for $1250 he was living in a caravan at Queanbeyan racecourse and drove a taxi to make ends meet.

Janiak now owns a million-dollar training facility at Coffs Harbour.
