Bombers dispose of Power in elimination final

HERVEY Bay Bombers will fly the Fraser Coast flag in the rest of the QFA Wide Bay Sunshine Coast finals series.

The Bombers overcame recent history and avenged last season's preliminary final loss to emphatically end Bay Power's season.

 

The Torquay club shot out to 21-point lead at the first break, but while the Power fought back in the second term the Bombers kicked away to win by 33 points.

Hervey Bay controlled what was an, at times, spiteful elimination final.

A look at the scoreboard, which read 15.14-104 - 10.11-71 at full-time, showed the Bombers' superior ball movement through the centre of the field to the forward line.

Bombers coach Tony Potter was overjoyed when the siren sounded, but brought his team back to earth within minutes.

While the players celebrated their first win over the Power at Keith Dunne Oval since August 20, 2016, Potter told his team the job was nowhere near done.

He is now tasked with ensuring his players are ready to fire at Maroochydore next week, when it takes on the Roos in the preliminary final.

A six-goal final term for minor premiership-winning Maroochydore was not enough to prevent Brothers Bulldogs from an 11-point victory.

The Bulldogs led by 43 points at the final break, but managed to hold off Roos to secure a fairytale return to the top.

Brothers finished last in the 2016 AFL Wide Bay season, and will play in its first grand final since the 2015 decider, which it lost to Across The Waves by 14 points.

For the Power, it is an early end to a season which promised so much.

A poor percentage robbed the Urangan club of a minor premiership, as they, Maroochydore and Brothers finished equal on 38 points.

Coach Michael Gay had no excuses after the elimination final: the Bombers were simply a much better side on the day.

Gay and his players will undoubtedly undergo soul searching in the wake of the result, which takes the club's search for a maiden title back to square one.
