Bodies may be missing couple

POLICE believe two unidentified bodies found at a crime scene near Cairns are those of missing Gympie woman Cindy Masonwells and her husband Scott Maitland.

The couple (above) was last seen in Cairns on July 5.

A 40-year-old Bungalow man has been charged with two counts of murder following investigations into their disappearance and is due to reappear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 3.

Formal identification procedures are still to be completed and investigations are continuing.

The bodies were found about 40m into dense bushland at Kanimbla, near Cairns, on steep terrain inaccessible by road.

Up to 50 officers were yesterday still working on the case. It may take up to a week to identify the bodies.

Police said they believed others may have been involved.
