BMX bandits ramp up for finale
GYMPIE BMX Club officials are in overdrive ahead of hosting the final round of the Southern Zone Shootout Series this weekend.
Gympie publicity officer Daniel Kirkpatrick said the club was “ramping up” its efforts ahead of the big event on Sunday.
“Last weekend at Ipswich there were over 350 riders plus their families that attended the second last round of the shootout series,” he said.
“Having the final round of the series, we will be probably expecting a few more riders as this is the trophy round.”
The Gympie club recently completed an ambitious overhaul of its racing track, offering more challenges to riders.
Making the final round even more crucial is that mystery points will be allocated to riders on the day.
With so much on the line, spectators can expect to see some fierce competition, particularly from a selection of pro riders who will be taking part and chasing the lucrative prize money.
“It will be great for the spectators to come and see the aerial action,” Kirkpatrick said.
“A number of world-ranked racers will be attending, chasing the prize money as well.”
Riders will range from three-year-olds through to veterans, and the Gympie club has its own stronghold of competitors looking for glory on their home track.
Nominations will close 9.30am Sunday morning and racing will get underway at 10.15am.
The Gympie public is welcomed to attend and the club is located behind the One Mile Ovals, below the Gympie Ten Pin Bowling centre.
