Bishop urges democracy
AUSTRALIA'S foreign minister Julie Bishop says China shouldn't ignore democratic values if it wants to reach its full potential.
Ms Bishop also dismissed fears of a trade war between the Asian superpower and the US.
In Singapore on Monday night, she said the US needed to play a greater role in the Indo-Pacific region.
"The importance of liberal values and institutions should not be underestimated or ignored,” Ms Bishop told the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
"While non-democracies such as China can thrive when participating in the present system, an essential pillar of our preferred order is democratic community.”
"The United States has issues with China, China has issues with the United States, but I believe they can be resolved by high level consultation and discussion and I hope we see that.” - News Corp
