Billy’s Hotel fined for breach
ANOTHER Gympie hotel was hit in court this week after allowing a highly intoxicated man to consume alcohol on the premises.
Billy's Hotel, under Herbcliff, was fined $1200 in Gympie Magistrates Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to the August 1 offence.
The charge came after officers from the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation carried out a covert operation in the Mary St venue last year.
The officers saw a man who was unsteady on his feet enter Billy's about 11pm. While there, he was seen to shoulder charge someone on the dance floor, mock fight with patrons and intentionally wave a cigarette near someone.
At about 11.40pm the man was evicted from the hotel.
Magistrate M. Baldwin said the licensee failed to take positive action to remove the man earlier.
"There is high onus placed on licence holders," she said.
"We need to make sure the community is protected from drunken idiots."
Billy's Hotel director Lesley Mitchell said she was bitterly disappointed she was in court over the offence but admitted the "buck stops with them".
"I hold myself in high regard and hold my business in high regard," she said.
It was heard all staff members had a current responsible service of alcohol certificate.
No conviction was recorded.
