YOUR lifestyle could be killing you.
Capricornia Division of General Practice nutritionist and healthy lifestyle co-ordinator Jaqueline Smith said an unhealthy diet and physical inactivity would lead to lifestyle diseases like heart disease and stroke, type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer.
She said the best way to get your diet under control was to reduce the amount of takeaway, fast foods and processed foods that you ate.
"Try to prepare most meals at home using fresh, wholefood ingredients," Ms Smith said.
Ms Smith also recommended increasing your intake of fibre, with many Australians only consuming 18-25 grams of fibre.
The recommended daily intake is 30 grams.
"This is helped by increasing fruit and veg, especially the skins, eating more whole grains, wholegrain bread, wholemeal pasta, brown rice, oats," Ms Smith said.
Lack of physical activity is also a risk factor for lifestyle diseases.
Ms Smith said people needed just 30 minutes of physical activity a day which could simply be walking, gardening, cleaning or more vigorous activities.
"Thirty minutes does not need to be done all in one, it can be spread over the day in five- or 10-minute increments," she said.

Your risk of contracting a lifestyle disease can be reduced by:
- Having a healthy, nutritious diet
- Exercising 30 minutes a day
- Reducing your stress levels
- Reducing your alcohol intake
- Giving up smoking
