Surf club member saves man after incident off Bucasia beach

LATEST: AFTER his kayak capsized off the coast at Shoal Point, Wayne Clarke was left calling for help as he drifted across the beach.

The incident was initially reported as being a boy stuck on a shark net buoy.

Witnesses heard Mr Clarke's shouts from Urarii Crescent, before they arrived at the beach to see him waving his arms in desperation. Breathless but uninjured, he made it to shore.

"A wave just hit me and rolled me over and I couldn't get back in the kayak properly," Mr Clarke said.

"It filled with water so I was stuck floating around for quite a while. I'm just breathless now, looking forward to getting back home."

An Eimeo Surf Club member, who did not wish to be identified, swam out almost 200 metres to help Mr Clarke swim back to shore with the kayak in tow.

He said Mr Clarke had initially tipped into the water near Dolphin Heads Resort and was salvaged hundreds of metres away from where he fell.

"He had turned over and his kayak was half sunk ... (so) I just swam out there," the club member said.

"He had a life jacket on and he was better off staying with his boat - he was too stuffed, he couldn't even swim."

Stephanie Lacey heard the incident from her home 500m away. She said the consistency and the length of screaming drew her down to the scene.

"I was sitting in my lounge room ... and I heard someone screaming," Ms Lacey said.

"When I was walking down here I heard sirens and that's what made me think it was a bit serious."

UPDATE: THE MALE who was stuck on a shark net bouy off the coast of Bucasia Beach is now on the shore.

It is understood the man has a motorised kayak.

Earlier reports suggested the person stuck was a child.

EARLIER: A CHILD is stuck on a shark net buoy off Mackay's coastline.

The child is stuck off Bucasia Beach in the ocean between Bucasia and Shoal Point, just north of the old Bucasia swimming enclosure.

It is currently high tide and emergency services are on their way to the beach.

The Bucasia Beach swimming enclosure is not listed as an option in Mackay Regional Council's safe swimming community consulation.
