Bad cheque ups price of smokes

A BAD cheque cost a Southside woman a criminal charge when she passed it off as payment for $86 worth of cigarettes.

Joanne Lesley Whittaker, 33, was charged with fraud after her cheque bounced on June 17 and she failed to repay the amount promptly.

“My client advised me that she’s more than happy to pay,” duty solicitor Leanne Gordon told Gympie Magistrates Court.

“This is a matter that need not have come to court.”

Magistrate Maxine Baldwin said she understood the circumstances but the matter was an example of how careful people needed to be with their finances.

Whittaker, of Copp Road, Southside, was placed on a $200 bond to be of good behaviour for three months.
