'Old-school' caring style puts Coast doctor in the spotlight

DOCTOR David Raine likes to care for his patients "old-school" style.

The Caloundra GP, who helped keep a patient with chronic kidney disease at home and out of hospital for as long as possible while he battled the terminal illness, has been recognised for his personalised approach to patient care.

Dr Raine is one of four finalists in the individual distinction category of the HESTA Primary Health Care Awards.

The Trinity Clinic GP helped his patient to remain at home during his illness and to continue dialysis treatment away from hospital by arranging outside care, service aides and making home visits.

"I have been brought up in the old school," Dr Raine said.

"My father was a GP in Nambour from 1949 and home care was always a part of what we did.

"This award nomination is overwhelming but it is nice to know that you are doing a good job, so it's an honour to have this come along."

Dr Raine has been at the Trinity Clinic for the past 30 years and has formed friendships with many families in that time.

"You get to know the family, which is an important and rewarding part of the job," he said.

"What I like about being a GP is the interpersonal contact and firm bonds you develop with your patients.

"It's very rewarding to feel this trust they have in you and it's a big responsibility."

The winner of the HESTA Primary Care Health Awards will be announced in Melbourne on June 6.

The Young Leader and the Individual Distinction Award winners will each receive a $5000 ME Bank EveryDay Transaction Account and a $5000 education grant.
