HONOUR a great Australian today by nominating them for the Gympie region's annual Australia Day awards.

Gympie Acting Mayor Tony Perrett said the awards provided a great opportunity to reward and recognise people who have given so much to the community.

"Nominations for the 2014 awards program are now open and I encourage everyone to consider nominating people around them who have made a positive contribution to community life," Cr Perrett said.

"Events and other activities can also be recommended for recognition, as they too contribute to the health and vitality of our region."

Award winners will be announced during an awards ceremony at the Gympie Civic Centre on Australia Day.

Eight award categories are available; Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (14-25 years), Community Event of the Year, and three sports awards including Junior (14-25 years), Senior and Administrator categories, and Junior (14-25 years) and Senior Cultural awards.

"As we approach the busy festive season, now is a good time to complete a nomination form and get it in to council," Cr Perrett said.

"It really takes little effort to nominate and duly honour important people who do so much for our community and our region."

Nominations are open until 5pm on December 9. Forms are available at gympie.qld.gov.au, via council offices, libraries and the regional gallery, or by phoning 1300 307 800.
