Study shows benefits of tea

IT'S GOOD news for lovers of the humble cuppa.

A recent Australian study into the health benefits of black tea revealed the potential for significant health benefits for those who enjoy more than a daily cup or two.

The study found drinking a cup of black tea at least three times a day decreased blood pressure, with the associated benefit to potentially reduce the risk of heart disease by as much as 10%.

Lead author, Research Professor Jonathan Hodgson of UWA's School of Medicine and Pharmacology, said high blood pressure could significantly increase a person's risk of heart disease.

"There is already mounting evidence that tea is good for your heart health, but this is an important discovery because it demonstrates a link between tea and a major risk factor for heart disease," he said.

"At a population level, the observed differences in blood pressure would be associated with a 10% reduction in the prevalence of hypertension (high blood pressure) and a 7% to 10% reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease."

Of course, this is also good news for members of the Country Women's Association, who get together at least once a month for a chat and a cup of tea, or two, or even three.

Esther Gregory, secretary of the Maclean Branch of the CWA said she enjoys about three of four cups of tea each morning.

"I'm a big tea drinker," Ms Gregory said, clearly pleased to learn of the report's findings.
