Super Bowl champs select Aussie monster in NFL Draft

AUSTRALIAN Jordan Mailata is joining the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

The Former South Sydney Rabbitohs youngster was selected in the seventh round with the 233rd overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The 6'8", 346-pound Mailata is listed as an offensive tackle, but has never played a down of competitive football, so there's no telling what the Eagles have planned for the Australian.

The 20-year-old only arrived in the US a few months ago but his freakish size and speed and a fast-track orientation as an offensive lineman at the IMG Academy in Florida was enough to have NFL scouts salivating.

At his pro day attended by scouts from all 32 NFL teams Mailata ran the key 40-yard dash in 5.12 seconds.

The Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Pittsburgh Steelers, Los Angeles Chargers, Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons invited him to workouts.

Speaking to before his selection, Mailata explained what sets him apart.

"I think rugby league has helped me hone my skills in agility, my toughness, and my speed.

"Those three skills mainly, and being smart - that awareness, learning to adapt to a certain situation certainly helps with the transition."

It's been a quick-fire process for the Australian, who has had to pick things up quicky.

"It's like being a sponge, really. The more I can get, the more I learn.

"So just trying to soak up everything. Obviously it's been a million miles an hour, so it's definitely what I expected, but I love it."
