GYMPIE cross country runners Shaun Lee and Clare O’Brien have come back from the state championships as part of the Queensland team.

Lee won gold in his age group and ran the four-kilometre course in a personal best time of 13 minutes 12 seconds.

The James Nash student took the lead around the 1km mark and held a slight advantage until the 3km mark.

It was then the 14 year old picked up the pace and won the race by 11 seconds.

O’Brien came fourth in her 3km race in a time of 11m 15s.

“I was happy with my time,” the Gympie West student said.

The winner only beat the 12 year old by 13 seconds.

Coach Keith Brown was happy with the performances of his charges.

“I am super pleased with the result. They need to be applauded for their dedication to training,” he said.

He also said the other Gympie runners in the team performed well at the state event.

Brown said the Gympie runners finished ahead of all their Wide Bay counterparts to make Gympie one of the best long distance running centres in the zone.

Lee and O’Brien will return to the Bald Hills course on August 21 for the national event.
