Asian trade mission to promote Queensland agriculture

QUEENSLAND agriculture will be taken to Indonesia and Singapore in a trade mission which has united Queensland politics.

State Treasurer Tim Nicholls announced on Tuesday he would lead a mission to Jakarta and Singapore to push Queensland agriculture.

"This mission will target important Indonesian and Singaporean markets for Queensland, including our state's world-class food and agribusiness, and education and training industries," he said.

"Queensland's food and agriculture sector is valued at more than $14 billion per year and is our state's second-biggest export earner, contributing more than $13 billion to the state's economy."

Opposition leader Annastacia Palaszczuk praised the trade mission saying she supported efforts to help Queensland farmers.

"I've always supported ministers going overseas to promote Queensland products," she said

"I understand he's going overseas to promote the agricultural side of Queensland and that is the right thing; that should be happening."

Mr Nicholls said the emerging south-east Asian market was a huge opportunity for Queensland.

"There are two key countries in the ASEAN group. The ASEAN group represent 600 million people, an enormous market with an enormous potential for Queensland," he said.

Mr Nicholls said agriculture would be a key focus for trade talks in Indonesia.

He said the mission would build on initial discussions the government had with Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin during G20.
