Arson attempt on hostel leaves building damaged

A MAN has allegedly tried to set a Fortitude Valley hostel on fire.

Police say the man smashed his way into the Gipps Street building around 6.40pm.

They say he has then gone to a room inside and used an accelerant to start a fire, causing the alarms to go off and the building to be evacuated.

He was allegedly then seen leaving via the smashed window and was followed to a nearby carpark where he was found by police and charged.

The 28-year-old Brisbane man was charged once with attempted arson and once with entering a premisis with intent to commit an indictable offence.

There was minor fire and smoke damage to one room in the building as well as smoke damage to an adjacent room. No one was injured as a result of the fire.

The man is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court today.
