Arson attack leaves community in shock

TWO men have been charged over a horrific weekend crime spree which left the small community of Stradbroke Island in shock.

In the early hours of Saturday morning Betty Conlon, the wife of island firefighter Brian, was bashed by a group of thugs who set her home alight and left her to die.

Neighbours came to her rescue, but the home could not be saved.

Just moments before five balaclava-clad men burst into the home, Mr Conlon was called out to investigate reports of a number of fires in town.

The post office and local high school were gutted by fire.

Police believe they were torched in a deliberate attempt to lure Mr Conlon out of his home, leaving his wife vulnerable.

On Sunday, two Dunwich men aged 24 and 23, were charged with attempted arson, assault occasioning bodily harm, robbery with violence in company, deprivation of liberty, enter premises with intent and stealing.

Investigations are continuing.
