ARC to provide a hub for athletes from all disciplines
MULTI SPORT: Gympie's new Aquatic Recreation Centre will not only provide our swimmers with a world-class training facility, but will cater to athletes from all sporting disciplines, according to swimming coordinator Kellie Hutchings.
Speaking at the opening of the facility on the weekend, Hutchings told The Gympie Times the indoor heated pool and gymnasium were ideal for team sport recovery sessions, while the Olympic pool will provide plenty of conditioning opportunities for athletes wanting the edge.
A passionate advocate for athletes with disabilities, Hutchings said the ARC will also be providing specialised coaching for para-competitiors; a first in the Gympie region.
"This facility is world class,” she said.
"We will easily be able to host state level swimming meets.
"It is another level of entity.
"Those meets will bring in business, it will place Gympie on the sporting map,” she said.
While a head swimming coach has not yet been announced, Hutchings is confident a decision will be made in the coming weeks.
"Someone (a coach) would see this as a massive career opportunity,” she said.
However, it is the push into the para-athlete market that Hutchings is most excited about, and said interest levels amongst potential swimmers with a disability is high.
She has already received dozens of inquiries from young swimmers who are either on the autistic spectrum or are subject to other disabilities.
"We will be catering programs to those children specifically.
"Where they couldn't get lessons before, we will ensure our coaches can cater to them,” Hutchings said.
