Aquatic centre's reo-steel orders set in concrete
IT IS set in concrete, literally and Gympie Regional Council says there was no option.
But Gympie region steel supply businesses have missed out on supplying reinforcing steel for the Gympie Aquatic Recreation Centre construction project.
A council spokeswoman says the 80 tonnes of steel was sourced via an open market tender process and the decision was made by the construction contractor.
The steel was sourced from Brisbane and Melbourne and fabrication took place in Brisbane, Toowoomba and Melbourne, she said.
"Melbourne was the only place in Australia that they could bend the steel beams for the shade structure.”
She said the contractor had unsuccessfully tried to find a local supplier.
