Apprentice is ready to race
APPRENTICE mechanic Tom Watson will live out one of his childhood dreams this weekend when he works as part of the pit crew for the Hyundai i30 Rally team in the International Rally of Queensland.
Watson is one of only two Queenslanders selected to work at the event. The rally starts up Friday night in Caloundra, then races around the forests of the Mary Valley on Saturday and Sunday.
The 18-year-old ex-Gympie State High School student is in the first year of his apprenticeship at Pacific Hyundai on the Bruce Highway in Gympie.
He said although he was nervous he could not wait to get out and help out the factory team in the pits over the weekend.
“I am pretty scared really. I don’t know what to expect,” Watson said.
“I know when the car comes back in after the race we have to be under it and checking everything is all right. I’d say there will be a lot of tyre changes and replacing parts that are worn out.”
Watson has wanted to be motor mechanic since he was a youngster and said he had always loved motorsport.
“This is a really great opportunity. It is something I would love to do all the time if I got a chance,” Watson said.
His weekend starts Friday morning, when he gets to have a ride in the rally car and learn about servicing the vehicle.
On Friday night he will be with the car during the Super Special Stage in Caloundra, before buddying-up with an existing crew member to follow the team’s service schedule in Imbil.
