Counting continues as 44th Parliament remains a mystery

APN NewsdeskTHE final make-up of the 44th Parliament remained a mystery on Monday night as counts continued in a number of close contests around the country.

As it stood on Monday afternoon the Coalition had secured 86 seats, Labor 51, the Greens, Katter's Australian Party and Andrew Wilkie one each and a further 10 were too close to call.

Allowing for postal votes to come in and the inevitable recounts, the outcome in some seats may not be known for days, including Fairfax where Clive Palmer stands a real chance to win the seat for his fledgling Palmer United Party,

As of Monday Barton was the tighest contest in the country, with Labor's Steve McMahon leading by 62 votes with 77% of the vote counted.

There has been a two-party-preferred swing of almost 7% against Labor in Barton, left vacant by retiring former attorney-general Robert McLelland.

The Queensland seat of Capricornia was another in the balance on Monday.

Labor's Peter Freeleagus, who is seeking to replace Kirsten Livermore in the seat, was ahead by just 141 votes on Monday.

In the Senate the Palmer United Party appeared certain to win two seats - Glenn Lazarus in Queensland and Jacqui Lambie in Tasmania.

TOO CLOSE TO CALL

  • Barton - NSW Labor (77% counted - ALP leads by 62 votes)
  • McEwen - Vic Labor (73% counted - ALP leads by 72 votes)
  • Capricornia - Qld Labor (80% counted - ALP leads by 141 votes)
  • Indi - Vic Liberal (78% counted - Coalition leads by 344 votes)
  • Petrie - Qld Labor (74% counted - LNP leads by 600 votes)
  • Eden Monaro - NSW Labor (80% counted - Coalition leads by 635 votes)
  • Reid - NSW Labor (76% counted - Coalition leads by 625 votes)

*A further three seats are in doubt where two-candidate-preferred counts were unavailable: Fairfax, Fisher and Mallee.
