Another try on clogged toilet

RAINBOW Beach bathers waiting to use proposed new beachfront toilets will just have to wait a little longer, according to a council report this week.

After an earlier “yes” indication from the Department of Environment and Resource Management for a toilet block on the beach side of the car park, council spent considerable time and money surveying the site and drawing up plans.

But the department ultimately rejected the idea, on the basis that the site was erosion prone.

Now council has received a similarly positive indication that its alternative site, near the existing toilets, “may be considered a more reasonable proposal”.

Addressing this week’s Gympie Regional Council Works and Services Committee meeting, council’s Engineering Services director Bob Fredman said the latest response appeared more promising than previous correspondence, even though the whole area (including the new site) was erosion prone.

He acknowledged the DERM application process now needed to be carried out even though the DERM advice was worded in a non-committal way. “It’s in a different language, but I interpret it to you as positive,” he said.
