Anglers hook new contest
JUST as the Mitsubishi Motors Rainbow Beach Family Fishing Classic is winding up, another fishing competition is being launched in the Gympie region.
But instead of anglers hitting the saltwater they will be able to compete for a host of prizes in the freshwater.
The Mary Valley Family Fishing Classic will have its inaugural competition the weekend of October 27 and 28 at Borumba Dam.
Glenn Williams is chairman of the new fishing competition organised by the Gympie and Mary Valley Lions clubs. Mr Williams said the reason behind the event was the Lions clubs were trying to get more happening in the Mary Valley.
"We want to show the Mary Valley is not just a great place to live, but work and play," Mr Williams said.
"Any funds we make from the day will be put back into community projects in the Mary Valley area."
The weekend would kick off Friday night with a huge barbecue for all the entrants and their families.
The competition proper would get under way Saturday and finish just after lunch Sunday.
Mr Williams said there would be plenty of prizes on offer in all different fish categories including red claw.
Borumba Dam is home to a variety of fish including saratoga, yellow belly, bass, silver perch and catfish.
"We like to see 200 competitors," Mr Williams said.
"We are issuing a Lions challenge to other clubs as far north as Hervey Bay, west to Kingaroy and south to Caboolture .
"It will be a weekend for all the family and a lot of fun.
"We would love to see as many people at the dam as possible."
