‘Angels’ save struggling diabetic after cyclone
IN THE wake of Cyclone Marcia, four angels appeared.
Suffering diabetes, 86-year-old Jean Biles was weak, sick and struggling in the aftermath of Marcia but Polly White, Sue-Ellen Byrne, Michael Byrne and Jimmi Foord were there to lend a helping hand.
Polly, who is a family friend of Jean's, knew her friend was alone throughout the cyclone and made sure to check in with her as soon as she could.
And she's certainly glad she did.
"I live out at Bajool but I knew Jean was on her own so I came in to check on her," Polly said.
"Her son has cancer and was in hospital having surgery when the cyclone hit and her other son was out of town, so Jean was all by herself.
"Jean is a diabetic controlled by diet and because the power had gone off she was afraid of eating much from the fridge.
"When I got to her house I took one look at her and knew something was wrong; she was so weak.
"I rushed out and got some oranges and lollies and once she'd had those, I had my friend back."
Over the next few days Polly continued to check in on Jean but said unfortunately she fell ill and was in desperate need of help.
"A few days later I couldn't get hold of her and started to worry," Polly said.
"I found out that because of the heat, she was very sick and I just thought how am I going to help this poor lady?
"I called SeaFM and they put the call out for help and that's when something really beautiful happened."
Polly said after Jimmi from SeaFM asked for help, Sue-Ellen Byrne and Michael Byrne came to save the day.
"Mick and Sue from Gracemere answered our call for help and brought in generators, a portable shower, fuel, lemonade, ginger ale and ice and a few other things," she said.
"They're both out of work but they made a sacrifice to help Jean out.
"They were so beautiful, they're absolute angels."
Since offering their help, Mick, Sue and Jimmi have kept in contact with Jean and a wonderful friendship has blossomed.
Jean is organising a special card for the trio to say thank you, and hopes to send Mick and Sue out to dinner together.
