American expecting rowdy Hopman Cup reception

TENNIS: American star CoCo Vandeweghe is looking forward to facing Australia in the Hopman Cup on Thursday night, even though the match will be a dead rubber.

Nick Kyrgios kept up an unbeaten Hopman Cup record with a 7-5 6-4 defeat of Czech Adam Pavlasek on Tuesday night but Davria Gavrilova lost 4-6 6-4 6-4 to Lucie Hradecka.

Needing to win the mixed doubles, Kyrgios and Garvilova went down 3-4 4-3 4-2 to allow Vandeweghe and partner Jack Sock to go through to Saturday's final after a 3-0 success over Spain.

Thursday night's clash might not have much riding on it, but Vandeweghe was still expecting vociferous home support.

"I think it's always fun to play against an Australian (in front of) their home crowd, or any countryman against their home crowd,” she said.

"I hope the crowd comes out there with full support to the Aussies because that's what tennis is about.

"You are supposed to support your country and hopefully we have a few Americans in the crowd to help us out a little bit.

"I hope it's a good time out there at the night session.”

Meanwhile, Venus Williams has been forced to withdraw from the ASB Classic in Auckland through injury.

The former world No.1 experienced pain in her right arm during her tough first-round win over Kiwi teen Jade Lewis on Wednesday and was deemed unfit to continue in the tournament she has starred in for the past four years.

Lewis, who was playing her first WTA match, pushed the American legend to the limit in the first set before eventually succumbing 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 in 88 minutes.

Lewis is the niece of 1983 Wimbledon runner-up Chris Lewis.
