ALP membership doubles in Queensland to 8000

MORE than 4000 people have joined the Queensland branch of the ALP since its 2012 election loss, according Queensland's Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk, boosting membership to 8000.

Ms Palaszczuk revealed the huge membership surge on Sunday as she celebrated her party's landslide victory in the Stafford by-election.

Labor won the by-election on Saturday with a swing of 18.6 per cent against the LNP, almost three times the average by-election swing against a government.

At a Stafford home on Sunday, Ms Palasczczuk told Labor supporters there had been a groundswell of people re-joining the ALP and others joining the party for the first time.

The ALP cut the price of membership to the party in late 2012 after an analysis of the 2012 state election loss, which slashed Labor's MP numbers to 7, shoving Labor into Opposition.
