Jones will defend claims he defamed four Queensland brothers

RADIO host Alan Jones will testify in the witness box in Brisbane Supreme Court on Thursday, to defend claims he defamed four Toowoomba brothers.

On the 13th day of the judge-only trial, after four Wagner brothers, two wives and some flood and reputation witnesses have given evidence, Mr Jones will rely on a defence of truth.

Denis, John, Neill and Joe Wagner have sued Mr Jones, Radio 4BC Brisbane, Jones's employer Harbour Radio and journalist Nick Cater for damages for defamation.

The total claims against the four defendants were recently increased to $4.8 million.

More than 40 witnesses are expected to give evidence for the defence.

Mr Jones claimed the Wagners caused or were culpably responsible for the deaths of 12 people who drowned in the Grantham floods when a bund at a quarry they operated collapsed.

Joe Wagner, the youngest of the brothers suing Mr Jones, yesterday cried in court while telling of the effect of the broadcasts on his children.

Mr Wagner said his son, Joey, then 12, had told him how a schoolmate said that his parents said: "Joey Wagner's parents were responsible for killing people at Grantham.''

He said his daughter, when she was in Year 12, was physically and verbally abused because of the broadcasts.

The hearing continues.
