Ahmed turns game Vics’ way in Shield decider

VICTORIAN leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed (pictured) dealt Western Australia's hopes of adding a Sheffield Shield title to its One-Day Cup and Big Bash League trophies from this season a huge blow, taking 8-89 as the Warriors were dismissed for 421 in their first innings in Hobart.

Ahmed's figures surpassed the previous best in a Shield final of 8-101 by WA's Chris Matthews against Queensland in 1988.

It also took his season's tally to 48 from 11 matches, and put the 33-year-old squarely in selectors' sights for a spot on this year's Ashes Tour of England.

Adam Voges top-scored for the Warriors with 107, taking his total in 2014-15 to 1322, fourth on the list of most Shield runs in a season behind only Simon Katich (1506), Michael Bevan (1464) and Matthew Elliott (1381).

Needing only a draw to take the title, Victoria went to stumps on day two at 0-135.
