Granny, 52, chases model dream

UTILISING every opportunity and leaving no door unopened are two things Joanna Terpstra has aimed to live by.

The 52-year-old grandmother, from Woodford Island, has stayed true to those aims, recently fulfilling her childhood dream of becoming a model, signing to well-known Australian modelling agency, Tamblyn Models.

“I tried to break into the world of modelling a few times when I was younger, but it never seemed to go anywhere, so I kind of gave up on the idea,” she said.

Hope and inspiration to try to break into the game again came with a recent exhibition of Geoffrey Lee Fashion Photographs at the Grafton Regional Gallery.

“I was at one of the opening events for the exhibition and was speaking with veteran model, Jan Carmody. At 52, I thought I was past it, but Jan assured me there was a demand for older models,” Joanna said.

“It just went from there, going from one agency to another and hoping someone would like my look.”

When she came across Tamblyn, and they started talking about tax file numbers and bank account details, Joanna got a little excited.

“I was a little confused and asked the lady who was doing up the contracts if they really wanted me. She said most definitely as it is fairly difficult to find someone of my age with my figure and face. Needless to say, I was completely over the moon.”

Joanna just got back from two weeks of shooting portfolio images in Brisbane and may consider moving to the big smoke.
