AFL stars in town

THERE will be no shortage of AFL stars for kids to learn some tricks of the trade from when they attend tomorrow afternoon's NAB Auskick clinic.

Sydney Swans star Gary Rohan is making the trip to Coffs Harbour for the big event and he will be joined by AFL Hall Of Fame members Robert DiPierdomenico and John Rantall.

Rohan said that passing on some knowledge to young kids as they learned to love the game was a highlight for him.

"It's great teaching the kids the basics of AFL and just seeing them get excited when an AFL player comes down," he said.

"I know when I was a little kid I used to get excited when AFL players came, so I feel like I'm giving back to the juniors."

The country town that Rohan grew up in the western districts of Victoria is a two-hour drive from Geelong and the 21-year-old recalls having Cats stars like Gary Ablett Jr conducting clinics in his home town when he was a junior with stars in his eyes.

Rohan admits the clinics are also a good promotional tool.

"It's all rugby league up here so it's good to promote the game," he said.

"If the kids play rugby league that's fine, but they can have a kick as well and try new things."

Earlier in the season the red-headed flyer suffered a horrific compound fracture of the leg that ruled him out for the rest of the season. Rohan said he was planning to be up and running again by October in preparation for next season.

"I'm walking around now, which is good with my crutches, so it's slow and steady at the moment," he said.

The famous trio won't just be entertaining the kids tomorrow afternoon.

During the evening Rohan, DiPierdomenico and Rantall will be at a function at C.ex Coffs, where the more senior lovers of Aussie rules will be able to enjoy stories of playing exploits.

Rohan admits he'll be trying to take a bit of a back seat at the function, hosted by NAB, as he'll be trying to listen to the past champions tell their tales.
