Activist who took part in piggery protest fronts court

AN ANIMAL rights activist has been fined and given a stern warning after facing court for her part in a protest which put a Sunshine Coast piggery in lockdown.

Jamila Riley, 22, was charged with unlawfully entering farmland on December 1 last year as part of a "peaceful" protest in which more than 100 people entered Glasshouse Country Farms at Beerburrum.

She pleaded guilty to the charge in Maroochydore Magistrates Court yesterday.

At the time of the protest, the Daily reported about 30 people were inside the piggery while another 70 others were gathered outside.

"This kind of resistance aims to oppose oppressive systems that have seen other animals be enslaved, exploited and harmed," Leah Doellinger said from inside the facility.

It was the second time the farm had been targeted by the activists, the first occasion was in April last year.

There was no suggestion in court Riley took part in the first protest.

Magistrate Rod Madsen told Riley while she was entitled to have strong views, they had to be "balanced" with allowing other people to conduct their businesses lawfully.

He fined her $150 with no convictions recorded, but warned her of other protesters who had received harsher penalties.
