Abbott to launch Royal Commission into insulation scheme

The Abbott Government will launch a Royal Commission into the botched home insulation scheme under the Rudd Government.

Announced by Attorney-General George Brandis tonight, the commission will investigate the deaths of four young people and damage to homes and infrastructure related to the program.

While the Coalition had indicated before the election it may consider such an inquiry, the announcement was the first concrete sign the investigation would take the form of a Royal Commission.

The deaths of Reuben Barnes, Matthew Fuller, Mitchell Sweeney and Marcus Wilson will come under the spotlight.

A statement from the government said the Commission would also examine the initial decisions to pursue the insulation program, concerns raised internally and externally throughout the program, and other issues.

The government is yet to release full terms of reference for the inquiry, but has already put a deadline of July next year for it to complete its work.
