A new Sport Star

BARREL racer Tamika Anderson is the December monthly winner of the Gympie Sportsman's Association Sports Star of the Year award.

She joins tenpin bowler Stephen O'May, hockey player Patrick Barnes, futsal player Ella Flack, javelin thrower Liam O'Brien and enduro rider Peter-Daniel Allan as finalists in the prestigious awards.

Anderson wins the December award after great form in the saddle at the National Barrel Horse Association finals.

Her mother, Kerrie Anderson, said she won the 1D and 2D rounds for the juniors and has booked herself a spot on the plane to the NBHA Youth World Titles in Perry in the United States during July this year.

It is the third time Anderson has qualified for the Junior Worlds.

What makes her feat even more spectacular is that at just 15 she has also qualified to represent Australia at the NBHA Worlds in open competition.

That competition is in Perry during October.

"This is the first year she has qualified in both juniors and open," Kerrie said.

The Saint Patrick's Student started riding horses when she was two, and as she excelled at it she tried her hand at nearly all the equestrian sports. She won her first NBHA buckle in 2008 and hasn't looked back.
