Irrigators to take part in review

IRRIGATORS have been urged to play their part in a current review of rural irrigation pricing, despite Queensland Farmers’ Federation claims that the review will put “upward pressure” on water prices.

“The independent Queensland Competition Authority is conducting an open and transparent review of rural irrigation pricing and all interested parties are urged to take part,” Natural Resources Minister Stephen Robertson said this week.

“The QCA is engaging with stakeholders by conducting public meetings and inviting submissions on all relevant issues,” he said.

Mr Robertson said the government had built “significant safeguards” into future pricing processes, to help irrigators and their industry.

“New prices will not be greater than the sector’s capacity to pay and will be phased in over 15 years,” he said.
