AFP issue warrant for Mackay doctor on terrorism charges

UPDATE:

The South Australian Joint Counter Terrorism Team has obtained an arrest warrant for Dr Tareq Kamleh, they said in a statement.

The warrant relates to alleged terrorism related activity, including offences of:

  • Membership of  a terrorist organisation: Section 102.3 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth)
  • Recruiting for a terrorist organisation: Section 102.4 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth)
  • Entering, or remaining in, a declared area: Section 119.2 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth)

EARLIER:

An Islamic State doctor who once worked at Mackay Base Hospital will be charged with terrorism offences, despite being overseas.

Adelaide Magistrates Court will hear the charges against Dr Tareq Badawi Kamleh, for recruiting a person to a terrorist group after he left Australia to work in the wartorn Syrian city of Raqqa.

RELATED

The doctor landed in the headlines after appearing in an ISIS propaganda video filmed in Syria as part of his apparent "jihad for Islam".

Dr Kamleh worked as a paediatric registrar at the Mackay hospital for 10 months in 2013.

Mackay Base Hospital child and adolescent health director Dr Michael Williams said Dr Kamleh was "friendly and affable" when he was in Mackay.

He also had a good standard of medicine, Dr Williams said.

Dr Kamleh has since contacted South Australian media to say Coalition forces have "more blood on their hands than ISIS has on their knives".

"The only death that I have had to deal with since being here has been from either pathology or Coalition drone strikes," Dr Kamleh wrote to the Adelaide Advertiser, dismissing accusations that ISIS was a death cult.

If convicted, Dr Kamleh could face up to 25 years in prison on his return to Australia.
