ACA Masters Tour to award bursary

THE Australian Cricketers’ Association Masters Tour arrives in Gympie tomorrow, bringing some of the legends of the game to the region and awarding a $1000 bursary to one talented young player.

The scholarship recipient will also have the unique opportunity receive one-on-one mentoring from one of the Masters players.

In the running for the honour are Gympie juniors Tom White and Brendan Mahaffey, who will also be playing the Masters team in the Twenty20 feature at Albert Park Sunday.

ACA Chief Executive Paul Marsh said the scholarship would help meet the coaching, travel or other cricketing expenses.

“As well as the financial assistance, we recognise that these young players also need positive role models and who better than a former Australian player to give them guidance and a sounding board,” he said.

“We are on the lookout for players – male or female – with the talent and desire to play first-class cricket. Many of our current and former Australian players have come from regional parts of Australia, so this is a very important part of the tour program.”

Gympie Cricket Association treasurer Scott McIntosh said the scholarship was an opportunity encouraging young players to stay with the game.

“We are thrilled with the scholarship program and that two of our talented young players will have the chance to shine,” McIntosh said.

“No doubt they’ll get plenty of support from friends and family and the experience of being on the same ground as these big names will be a unique one.”

Meanwhile, tickets are still available for the Sportsman’s Night at the Gympie Civic Centre tomorrow night, getting underway at 6.30pm.

Tickets cost $40 per head and may be purchased from Woodrows Arts and Crafts Mary Street, Goldburgs Menswear and Sportspower.

The Sportsman’s Night is an opportunity to get up close and personal with Australian cricket royalty. Players will be speaking about their careers while there will also be a memorabilia auction.
