84,000 children at risk of disease without vaccination

MORE than 84,000 Australian kids could be struck down by preventable diseases such as measles and whooping cough because they are not immunised.

National Health Performance Authority data shows 84,571 children were not fully immunised last year.

It also showed most areas are falling short of the national target of 95% of children immunised.

In 2014-15, fully immunised one-year-old children ranged from 94% to 88% across the 31 Primary Health Network catchments.

Some improvements were seen for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children as immunisation rates increased significantly in certain areas.

NHPA CEO Diane Watson said the data allowed health professionals to put immunisation strategies where they were needed most.

"We want to see similar improvements in so many local areas where immunisation rates have remained largely unchanged over the past year," Dr Watson said.
