24 charged with trying to smuggle 120kg of fireworks

BIG fines or jail could be the result for 24 people charged with attempting to smuggle 120kg of fireworks into Queensland from the Northern Territory.

The fireworks were seized from 20 vehicles during a three-day operation on the Barkly Hwy near Mount Isa following Territory Day celebrations last week.

Authorities estimate more than 100 tonnes of fireworks are imported into the Northern Territory for the celebration each year.

Queensland Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said unused fireworks are taken out of the Northern Territory to be sold on the blackmarket or kept for personal use around Australia.

He said fireworks are dangerous and present a serious health, safety and security risk to all Australians.

The maximum penalty for illegally possessing, transporting, selling or using fireworks in Queensland is a $47,380 fine or six months imprisonment.
