Don’t forget me. Timmy’s timely Cup reminder
TIM Cahill has taken to Twitter to remind fans - and possibly the new Socceroos coach - of his World Cup value as the countdown continues to Bert van Marwijk's naming of Australia's 23-man squad for Russia 2018.
Handed just 65 minutes of game time in 14 matches since leaving the A-League for Millwall, and currently serving a three-game suspension in the English Championship, Cahill looms as a line-ball selection for van Marwijk.
To most, it would seem incomprehensible that the Dutchman could overlook Australia's long-time talisman and most prolific goalscorer for the global showpiece kicking off in 42 days' time.
The 38-year-old could join the legendary Pele and Germans Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose as the only players ever to score in four consecutive World Cups if given a crack in Russia.
With his place in the Socceroos squad up in the air, Cahill, an avid social media user, posted two Tweets to his some 820,000 followers while reminiscing about his fondest World Cup memories.
Van Marwijk's extended Socceroos squad will assemble in Turkey for a four-week, pre-World Cup training camp, on May 19.
The Dutchman must trim his squad to 23 by June 4, with Australia launching their campaign against France on June 16 in Kazan.
Despite his iconic, record-setting Socceroos status, Cahill has played for just 27 minutes under van Marwijk in Australia's two recent friendlies against Norway and Colombia.
