Sixteen charged after wild street brawl

A SERIES of fights that carried on from 6am to 5pm on Sunday at Cherbourg has led to 16 people being charged and more arrests are expected to be made.

A large number of people were involved in physical and verbal altercations throughout the day and defendants were charged with offences including public nuisance, breach of bail, possessing liquor in a restricted area and threatening violence and assault.

Sergeant Scott Prendergast said officers from surrounding towns were brought to Cherbourg in an attempt to quell the disturbance.

"Police were extremely disappointed with the behaviour of a number of persons, including the lack of the respect for other community members not involved in the disturbance," he said.

A 27-year-old Cherbourg man received head injuries in the fight and was flown to Toowoomba Hospital for treatment.

His injuries were not life threatening.

The people charged will face court in Murgon and Cherbourg next month.

Police investigations are continuing and anyone who can assist police with the investigation are asked to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
