10 injured in shocking weekend on Gympie roads

A WOMAN, 45, was flown to Brisbane in a critical condition, after a four-vehicle crash north of Gympie at the weekend.

She was among 10 road crash victims airlifted to hospital from three separate weekend crashes.

Two RACQ CareFlight helicopters airlifted a Glenwood couple from an earlier crash, a single vehicle rollover on the Isis Hwy, near Biggenden, before 8am Saturday.

One of the choppers was retasked within hours to a Bruce Hwy head-on near Gootchie, north of Gympie about 11.30am

An airborne medical team, including a doctor and intensive care paramedic stabilised the critically injured woman before taking her to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

Three other people were also rushed to Gympie and Nambour Hospitals from that crash, after the head-on led to a succession of impacts involving two other vehicles.

Wreckage and the rescue effort kept the highway closed for about four-and-a-half hours, police said.

And four people were taken to Gympie Hospital late Sunday afternoon with suspected spinal injuries after another Bruce Hwy head-on, between Tandur and Wilcox Rds, at Kybong.

Sunshine Coast and Bundaberg rescue helicopters arrived at the first crash to find the two patients already being treated by Queensland Ambulance Service officers.

The male, in his late fifties was taken to Nambour Hospital and the woman was flown to Bundaberg.

In the Gootchie crash, police said investigations suggested a southbound vehicle crossed to the wrong side of the road and hit a second sedan. It then crashed into a guard rail and ricocheted to the opposite side of the road, hitting the rear of a trailer being towed by a truck, then crashing into a third sedan.

A man, 48, was taken to Gympie Hospital and a female, 16 to Nambour, both in serious conditions and a female, 17 was taken to Gympie with minor injuries, police said.

Police said yesterday investigations into the crash were continuing.
