Gibbo stirs pension storm

GYMPIE MP David Gibson took the risk of insulting a large proportion of his electoral supporters this week, when he blasted the pension aspirations of “baby boomer” retirees and those hoping to retire soon.

Announcing that he wanted to “take off his politician’s hat and speak as David Gibson,” he spoke at a Sunshine Coast session of the “Our Future, Your Say” forum, organised by The Courier-Mail at Sippy Downs on the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday night.

The Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Planning told his audience that baby boomers were “selfish” to expect other generations to pay for their retirement.

“We have a situation here where we have a generation that has paid their taxes – and I’ll accept that – but has done nothing to prepare themselves for retirement.

“They expect a standard of living comparable to when they were working. So the burden is then placed on my generation and my children’s generation to support that. And that never ceases to amaze me,” he said.

Mr Gibson’s remarks attracted an angry response from bloggers who said the taxes paid by baby boomers included funding of pensions. “It is what we were promised in return for getting the next generation on track,” said one.

But another said young people were worse off because of housing prices.

I've already said this at CM but I'll say it here to and hopefully it will get through... How dare you little man, and how did you think this nation was built in the first place? Just remember the generations before you that built this country that you are so eager to claim as yours! The taxes that were used to support the aged of the day as too the taxes that are used to support the aged of today. One works a lifetime to build the country and you were looked after in your old age, That Sir! is how it is or was supposed to work, Not looking to live a life of the rich, Just wanting to live a life without starving or worrying if I'm going to have my electricity or phone turned off or being able to afford the car rego or the license and you think that is being selfish do you? This generation would have to be the most greedy, selfish and self-centered one to-date, Always wanting everything now, never willing to wait or save for it, credit card and personal loan debit to the wharzoo.

So what sort of a pension do politicians get and for being in parliament how long??
I think this is the "pot calling the kettle black" but then David and other politicians don't consider them selves ordinary citizens most of the time.
Remember Mr Gibson a lot of these "boomers" had no say in where their super funds were invested etc. and like a lot of others have to accept the fluctuations of the market and the vagaries of the fund managers. So how is the pollies super calculated????????
Remember David you represent your constituents, sometimes this entails putting your personal beliefs in the cupboard. That is why you were elected, if you do not agree, get out, but of course wait until you qualify for your pension first!!!!

David, you are a typical politician who has no idea of the real world.
Politicians, of all people, have no right whatsoever to criticise pension entitlements of ordinary people.

Did we actually vote this man into a position where he could slate people for working all their lives and hopefully living long enough to collect a pension?
Try coming up with a few solutions David instead of the usual political jackboot.
How about a percentage of the tax revenue going into supply pensions with a basic pension starting off for zero tax paid to upward increments of extra benefit for extra years worked to a maximum benefit to those who have worked and paid tax the longest. It's called incentive David just like your lurks and perks when your done with Parliament or voted out.

Also whilst your listening! abolish that draconian assets test as it does nothing for anyone except stifle productivity and keep people on the breadline, and if the Government needs to find more tax from somewhere to fund all this? try taking a long term view and see how much tax would be generated if people actually had an incentive to make it worth while to find work/pay tax and accumulate assets which also would be earning the Government an income even passed retirement.

How big is the pension that Bludger Gibson will get, funded by the huge state and federal taxes paid by Baby Boomers and others every day of their working lives for 40 years or more of hard slog, taxes inroduced by the likes of Mr Gibson who has just asked that his tax payer funded, tax free benefits, enetitlemets and allowances be increased at our expense, The sooner we rid ourselves of State Governments in this country the better, they are so out of touch with their constituants, it would be interesting to find out whether or not we the taxpayers funded the recent, well publicised Flegg birthday celebrations by LNP members in the George St buiding we pay for
