Airborne: An airport estate at Kybong has taken another step forward.
GYMPIE’S Kybong aerodrome is set to enter the 21st Century, with council approval of a plan which will ultimately lead to a residential airpark, where flyers can keep their aircraft in the garage, along with their cars.
The proposal, which was approved by Gympie Regional Council this week, allows a reconfiguring of two allotments in Fullerton Road near the airstrip, to allow one of them to be developed as a residential airpark estate.
Council accepted Planning and Development Committee recommendations that the plan would not compromise future development of the site, which is in an area set aside for “preferred future airport development.”
The approval will allow a smaller allotment around an existing dwelling and a larger area in the allotment planned for subdivision.
The committee recommendation includes an observation that the project “is unable to meet the minimum lot size of 100ha for subdivision in a Rural Zone,” but acknowledges that the existing lots are already below the minimum.
The proposal would result in a 4206sq m lot around the existing dwelling and a balance lot of 21.88ha, giving a larger area above flood level, potential access to a taxiway. The lots total 23.259ha and the current lot sizes are 8.238ha and 15.021ha, a planning report says. The report says no state planning policies are applicable.
