GYMPIE cricket legend Jim Geiger will be honoured today with an international cricket medal. He will be presented with the medal before play starts in the Gabba test between Australia and the West Indies.

JAMES Geiger, better known as ‘Jimmy’ will receive the International Cricket Council Centenary medal, the highest honour for cricket volunteers.

Six volunteers will be honoured for their contribution to cricket at the 3 mobile Test against the Windies.

All up, 50 Australian cricket volunteers will be recognised this season with the medal, with the six Queensland-based recipients to be awarded their medal by Cricket Australia Chairman and ICC Director Jack Clarke.

The ICC will be awarding 1000 of the medals worldwide in 2009 to celebrate its centenary.

Clarke paid tribute to these six and all volunteers who will be recognised through the season.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our sport and it is wonderful that the ICC have chosen to highlight their contribution through the ICC Centenary Volunteer Medal,” Clarke said.

“Not only is this recognition for the 50 worthy winners of the medal nationally, but recognition for the thousands upon thousands of volunteers who contribute to making cricket Australia’s favourite sport.”

Geiger is one of Gympie cricket’s most enduring servants and has been involved since 1948 with the Western Districts club as either a player or an administrator.

As a player, he had a highest score of 259 not out for Wests and as an administrator he achieved a similar milestone, serving as president of the club for 50 years.

He was heavily involved with the Gympie Cricket Association and Gympie Juniors during that period as well as serving with Queensland Country Cricket.
